Passengers flying on domestic routes will have to pay higher fuel surcharges from Wednesday as Chinese airlines seek to offset the rising fuel costs.

 

The fuel surcharges on routes longer than 800 kilometers will increase to 130 yuan (US$20.49) from 100 yuan, and passengers on shorter routes will pay 70 yuan, a rise from the current 50 yuan, the airlines said yesterday.

 

Children will also pay a higher surcharge of 60 yuan, up 10 yuan, for domestic routes of over 800 kilometers, and 30 yuan from the previous 20 for other routes.

 

The increase was sparked by the hike in the benchmark price of Singapore jet kerosene, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner.
