Xinhua reported local tourism officials as saying this week that the north face of Mount Qomolangma – the Chinese name for Everest – saw 59,100 tourists last year. This marks a 6% increase compared to 2013. Of the total, 7,600, or 13%, were international tourists, mainly from Europe.

And visitors will soon be able to access the mountain more easily; China is constructing a new road linking the mountain’s base camp with the national highway network. A tourist centre is also being built in a nearby village.

The 8,848-metre Mount Everest straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet, but the vast majority of climbers approach the mountain from the Nepalese side.
