Approximately 75.4 million Chinese are expected to travel by rail during the upcoming holiday season, the country's Ministry of Railways said yesterday.
The number of passengers traveling during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, which lasts from 27 September to 7 October, is expected to climb 5% year-on-year, to an average of 6.86 million people per day, according to a statement on the ministry's website. This will hit a peak of nine million daily passengers on 1 October.
To cater for the surge, China plans to add 241 extra train services during the holiday period.
