China to build world’s highest airport

Friday, January 6, 2012

China is lining up another record infrastructure project with plans to build the world’s highest airport in Nagqu, Tibet. At an altitude of 4,436m above sea level, construction is due to begin later this year and the facility is scheduled for completion in 2015.

Authorities have conducted a feasibility study which have assured operators and passengers that it is safe to operate at such extreme altitudes. At a cost of CNY1.8 billion (US$285 million) Nagqu airport is a key feature in government plans to improve infrastructure on the Tibetan plateau. Quoted by CNNG, Tan Yongshou, Nagqu's District Administration Officer, said; “Qinghai-Tibet Highway, Qinghai- Tibet Railway and this airport will form a multi-level traffic system in Nagqu.”
