A visit to Chengdu's panda reserve will make you better acquainted with this rare gentle giant and its equally endearing cousin, the lesser red panda. In laidback Chengdu city, stroll along pleasant old streets and discover some of its 2,400 years of history. In the all-purpose teahouses, sample spicy snacks, sip jasmine tea, watch old-timers play weiqi, and listen to instrumental music or perhaps a free Sichuan opera performance.

Then in Jiuzhaigou, listed as a UNESCO nature reserve, snow-capped mountains, serene forests and the myriad hues of plants and foliage will fill you with wonder. Juizhaigou's vivid palette of natural colors and its patchwork of shimmering waterways and lakes defy description. The matchless beauty inspired a colorful Tibetan legend which states that a mountain immortal, to show his love for a fairy, gave her a precious mirror which he had polished with the clouds and wind. But it slipped from her hands and broke into 108 pieces which became Jiuzhaigou's lakes.

The pure, clear, bodies of water in the area are considered to be its soul, the inspiration for the saying, "no water is worthy of your attention after you visit Jiuzhaigou". Besides the beauty of reflections in the water of lakes, there are numerous springs, unique waterfalls, sections of white water rapids, karst shoals and vast primitive forests with Tibetan villages nestled in the valleys. 30,000 hectares of pristine forest are home to 2,576 distinct species of animals. The forest includes scores of protected animals and plants such as the giant panda, golden monkey and mono-leaf grass. Tibetan and Qiang cultures are evident in traditional stone mills, Tibetan villages and Buddhist prayer flags.
