The Great Wall, one of the highlights of any visit to China, was originally built during the Qin and Han Dynasties. The total length is approximately 6,000 kilometers with many parts extremely well preserved, especially in Eastern China. The mountainous area surrounding Beijing is a very rewarding destination for exploring the Great Wall, as the Wall meanders along the steep mountain tops in order to defend the “Middle Kingdom” against ancient foreign invaders. This tour includes many hikes that bring you up close to enjoy the dramatic landscape and to experience the local culture.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing – Huanghuacheng (L D)
    • To start the day, we will drive to Huanghuacheng Great Wall, which literally means “Yellow Flower”. This is known as the only Great Wall section that is submerged in water. Hike the west wing of Huanghuacheng, past several fruit yards and bushes towards the Yaoziyu Village.
    • Finish the hike at a nearby village.
    • Overnight in a local village.
  • Day 2:
    Huanghuacheng – Gubeikou – Jinshanling
    • Transfer to Gubeikou Great Wall, located at a strategically important spot and famous for its strong military function. Hike towards Jinshanling Great Wall, the best preserved section of the Great Wall. It stretches about 10 kilometers long with 67 towers, originally built around 1570 during the Ming dynasty. We will first walk on a mountain range before arriving at the real wall. After a few kilometers on the wall, we will pass through a village with corn fields and then back to the wall again.
    • Gubeikou and Jinshanling Great Wall are connected. The Jinshanling Wall is situated on the Big and Small Jinshanling, hence its name. Based on huge stone pillars, the Wall was then constructed from large stones, each of which weighed about 12 kilograms (26 pounds). It has five main passes and 67 watchtowers. Every 100 meters (328 feet) there is a tower, each of which is about ten meters (33 feet) high.
    • Later afternoon transfer back to Beijing.
    • End of service.
