From Kunming to fabled 'Shangri-La', enjoy the colorful diversity of more than 25 ethnic minorities. Roam Lijiang Old Town's cobbled alleys, visit crimson-robed lamas in a Tibetan monastery, and marvel at the superb natural wonders of plunging gorges and snow-capped mountains. Located in southwestern China, Yunnan boasts some of the most varied geography in the country, with tropical rainforests in the south rising to jagged peaks and Tibetan highlands in the north. With the unique ethnic minorities that make "South of the Clouds" their home, they add cultural diversity to a province already rich with natural wonders. Snow-capped mountains, valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and highland villages make up some of the unforgettable scenery along our tour.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing / Shanghai - Kunming - Dali (L, D) Stone Forest

    Flight from Beijing / Shanghai to Kunming in the morning.
    Your tour guide will meet you at the airport.
    Visit the famous Stone Forest, where you can discover this unique geological wonder during an extensive walk through the labyrinth of steep rock needles and narrow openings in the rocks.
    On the way back visit an Yi Minority village.
    Night train to Dali in comfortable soft-sleeper cabins.

  • Day 2:
    Dali (B, L) Three Pagodas, Erhai Lake, Old City Center

    Arrive in the morning and transfer to the hotel, where breakfast is arranged.
    In the morning, visit Dali's iconic Three Pagodas, originally built in the Tang Dynasty.
    A cruise on Erhai Lake offers a panorama of villages and the magnificent Cangshan mountains.
    Visit a small island to see a Bai Minority village.
    Leisure time in the afternoon allows you to explore Dali's cobblestone streets in the picturesque old city center.

  • Day 3:
    Dali - Lijiang (B, L) Black Dragon Pool, Old Town

    A coach takes you through winding valleys to Lijiang, a beautiful Naxi minority town nestled in the mountains. In this UNESCO World Heritage site, a maze of narrow streets and canals make up the scenic Old Town, home to Naxi men and women in traditional dresses.
    Stop at the Black Dragon Pool for a great view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and its reflection in the clear waters.
    Afterwards you have leisure time to explore Lijiang on your own.
    Overnight in Lijiang

  • Day 4:
    Lijiang (B, L) Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Naxi Village
    • Breakfast at the hotel
    • Then transfer to the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
    • You will take a tram to one of the three highlights on the eastern side of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: the Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow, or Yak Meadow. (please choose one highlight option according to your physical status)
    • The most popular tram goes to Glacier Park. It is one of the highest elevation trams in the world, taking you to a big terminal building at an elevation of 4,506 meters
    • Another tram goes to Yak Meadow, at an elevation of about 3,650 meters
    • The third tram goes to Spruce Meadow where there are fewer crowds of tourists. Spruce Meadow is at an elevation of about 3,200 meters.
    • Take the tram back to the foot of the mountain after sightseeing.
    • A visit to a Naxi Minority village follows on the way back to experience the everyday life of the local farmers.
    • Overnight in Lijiang
  • Day 5:
    Lijiang - Zhongdian (B, L) Tiger Leaping Gorge

    Drive by coach to the stunning Tiger Leaping Gorge. In this stretch the Yangtze River is known as Gold Sand River, while it tumbles through one of the deepest gorges in the world. Along both sides of the ravine, snowy peaks rise dramatically to a height of 4,000 meters above the water.
    Continue by coach to Zhongdian in the afternoon.

  • Day 6:
    Zhongdian (B, L) Songzanlin Monastery, Emerald Pagoda Lake

    Popularized under the name of "Shangri-La", Zhongdian attracts visitors seeking a glimpse of Tibet. The 300 year old Songzanlin Monastery is built in the Tibetan style and is still home to many crimson-robed lamas.
    Afterwards, travel to Emerald Pagoda Lake, a highland lake at a height of 3,800 meters. You have time to explore the forested banks and can also visit a Tibetan family.
    Return to Zhongdian in the afternoon, with the rest of the day at your leisure.
    Overnight at Zhongdian

  • Day 7:
    Zhongdian - Kunming - Beijing / Shanghai (B, L) Western Hills, Dragon Gate

    Transfer to Zhongdian airport in the morning, for the flight from Zhongdian to Kunming.
    Upon arrival your guide will meet you again at Kunming airport for transfer to visit Western Hills and Dragon Gate.
    After sightseeing, transfer to Kunming airport for the flight back to Beijing / Shanghai in the late afternoon or evening.
