MGM unveils first Diaoyutai hotel in China

Thursday, November 13, 2014

MGM Resorts International taken a major step forward in its Chinese expansion strategy, with the launch of its first Diaoyutai-branded hotel in the country.

Operated by Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality, a joint venture between MGM and China’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, the new property in Chengdu marks a definitive shift away from MGM’s other large-scale properties in China and the US.

Located on the historic Kuanzhai Alley, in the Sichuan capital, the Diaoyutai Boutique Chengdu features just 45 rooms and suites. With a design concept that combines classic Chinese features with modern elements, it is a far cry from the glittering golden towers of Macau and Las Vegas or the expansive resorts of Sanya.

The hotel’s rooms and suites are separated into two areas, The Courtyard and The Mansion, and all feature 55-inch HDTVs and iPods, plus large bathrooms. F&B options include KZ Restaurant & Grill and Fangfei Garden bar, while the Royal Court provides private fine dining experiences for “guests and heads of states from around the globe”.

There is also a luxury retail boutique and private meeting space.

“We are delighted to collaborate with MGM Resorts International to launch The Diaoyutai Boutique Chengdu. The hotel brings Diaoyutai style, and our model of international cooperation with MGM, to a wonderful new hotel in a truly international Chinese city,” said Ambassador Zhang Junsai, director general of Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

The Chengdu property marks the second property for the Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality joint venture, following the MGM Grand Sanya. And James J. Murren, chairman & CEO of MGM Resorts International, said he looks forward to “a broadened cooperation” in future.

William M. Scott IV, executive director & general manager of Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality, added; “The Diaoyutai Boutique Chengdu is a milestone event for our company, and in our vision to combine our partners’ hospitality heritages through unique luxury hotels, residences, retail and entertainment experiences.”

There are no gaming facilities at the Chengdu property.
