Starwood boosts luxury portfolio in China

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has revealed plans to open four more luxury hotels in China this year. The company is planning new additions to its St Regis, Luxury Collection and W Hotels brands in 2014, continuing a major growth strategy that will see the company double its Chinese luxury portfolio by the end of next year. “The rapid growth of Starwood’s luxury brands in China reflects a robust demand for high-end hospitality from an increasingly affluent market, where domestic travel continues to thrive,” said Paul James, global brand leader for St Regis, Luxury Collection & W Hotels. “This year, we are thrilled to open four luxury hotels in distinct Chinese destinations for a new generation of global guests, who are more often travelling across our luxury portfolio.”

This year's openings include the 279-room St Regis Chengdu, which is due to open in late summer 2014, and the 353-room W Beijing Chang’an, which will mark the contemporary brand's debut in the Chinese capital. Two more Luxury Collection hotels are also scheduled to open this autumn, in Hangzhou and Dalian. The Azure Qiantang Hotel will offer 205 rooms on the banks of Hangzhou’s Qiantang River, while The Castle Hotel will feature 359 rooms, suites and residences in Dalian, set in a building designed to replicate a Bavarian castle. As well as these four hotels, Starwood has firm plans to add 15 more luxury hotels in China in the coming years, comprising seven St Regis properties, five W Hotels and four additions to its Luxury Collection.
