With an impressive system of defensive walls laid out in a turtle shape, the Qing dynasty financial centre, Pingyao earned the name ‘Turtle City.’ Much like the shell of a turtle, the walls protected its precious contents, in Pingyao’s case, the riches deposited there and the wealthy merchants who called the city home. Although no longer a financial hub, Pingyao offers a range of magnificent sights, its walls for one remain some of the best preserved and tower up around the city still creating an imposing sense of wonder and majesty. Its market streets play out much like the image of ancient Chinese life celebrated in film, with gentle sloping roofs covering street side stalls offering in particular, hand-made crafts, a popular and locally made type of cloth shoe and also a specialist in lacquer ware.
