Travel content

The three southern 'water towns' of Hangzhou, Suzhou and Wuzhen, each with their special attractions, are renowned as the Venice of China. As the saying goes, 'In heaven there is paradise; on earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou'.

Suzhou's intricate maze of canals, picturesque architecture and exquisitely designed miniature parks are unparalleled in artistry. It was also an early center of silk production and remains so to this day, including phenomenally fine silk embroidery of marvelous quality. Local seafood cuisine, ancient boat songs and the labyrinth of little lanes in the old town impart flavors of 'Old China'.

Wuzhen is a smaller ancient town, often called 'little Venice'. Rivers and creeks flow through it, spanned by stone bridges of various designs, with unique old waterside houses found here and there.

Hangzhou is most famous for its revered West Lake with its romantic mists, jade-hued waters and graceful gardens. Its tea and silk production date back to the end of the 6th century when it was connected to the Grand Canal. Marco Polo declared it to be one of the most splendid cities in the world of his time.
