A cosmic axis at the centre of the world's oldest religions and East Asia's most holy site, the pilgrimage trek to Mt Kailash is a must for anyone wanting to experience for themselves one the world's great religious events. The mountain, at 6,658 meters high is a spectacle in itself situated in the far western reaches of Tibet in an area far from the capital, Lhasa, and little visited by tourists. Add to this the color and splendor of the offerings made by Buddhist, Hindu and Jain pilgrims to the slopes of Kailash. The full pilgrimage site is done in three stages involving the banks of Lake Manasarova, Mt. Kailash and finally a dip in the holy waters of the hot springs at Tirthapuri.
